Farmhouse-Style Crocheted Pillow

IMG_20200204_163804.jpg

This Farmhouse-style crocheted pillow features alternating stripes of bobble stitches. I love the sophisticated and cozy look of this farmhouse-style crocheted pillow. The front features an easy pattern of alternating stripes of bobble stitches while the back can be finished in one of two ways a) using a simple DC pattern, or b) using a piece of fabric and sewing it to the front of the pillow. I’ve included instructions for both versions of the back of the pillow below. I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Materials

Yarn for front of pillow: ~400 yds of Bernat Softee Baby Cotton Yarn in Cotton, or other light-weight cotton yarn
Size G crochet hook
Scissors
Pillow form - use an 18” x 18” pillow form for a firm pillow or a 16” x 16” pillow form for a less firm pillow.
Material for back of pillow. Either a) ~300 yds of the same yarn used for front of pillow if you plan to crochet the back of the pillow, or b) one piece of coordinating fabric cut into 17” x 17” square - I used an off white denim fabric.

If sewing on the back of the pillow (finishing option b), you will also need a sewing machine, needle, thread and optional iron.

Abbreviations

Ch - Chain
SC - single crochet
HDC - half double crochet
DC - double crochet
Bobble - if you are unfamiliar with the bobble stitch you can find a good tutorial here

Gauge

9 stitches and 4 rows of DC = 2” x 2”

Instructions

Front of Pillow

Chain 78, turn
Row 1: HDC in 3rd chain from the hook, continue to HDC in each chain across to end, Ch1, turn (75 HDC sts)
Row 2: SC in first 2 sts, bobble stitch in next stitch, *SC in next three sts, bobble stitch in next st* repeat from * 17 times, SC in last 4 sts, Ch1, turn
Row: 3: SC in each st across, ch1, turn
Row 4: SC in first 4 sts, bobble stitch in next st, *SC in next three sts, bobble stitch in next st,* repeat from * 17 times, SC in last 2 sts, ch1, turn
Row 5: SC in each st across, Ch1, turn
Row 6: SC in first 2 sts, bobble stitch in next stitch, *SC in next three sts, bobble stitch in next st* repeat from * 17 times, SC in last 4 sts, Ch1, turn
Row 7: SC in each st across, Ch1, turn
Row 8: SC in first 4 sts, bobble stitch in next st, *SC in next three sts, bobble stitch in next st,* repeat from * 17 times, SC in last 2 sts, Ch1, turn
Row 9: SC in each st across, Ch2, turn
Row 10: DC in each st across, Ch1, turn
Row 11: SC in each st across, Ch2, turn
Row 12: DC in each st across, Ch1, turn
Row 13: SC in each st across, Ch1, turn

Repeat Rows 2-13 four more times, then repeat row 2-9 one final time ending on a SC row.

At this point the front of your pillow should measure ~16” x 16” and should start and end with a stripe of bobble rows.

Edging round: HDC in each stitch across, then work HDC stitches as evenly spaced as possible along all 4 sides of the piece, working HDC, ch, HDC in each corner. Take care to work the same number of HDC stitches along each side. Join with slip st in the first HDC. Fasten off. Note: if you want a larger seam allowance, you can use DC for edging round instead of HDC.

Back of Pillow Option 1: Crocheted Back

Chain 78, turn
Row 1: DC in 3rd chain from the hook, DC in each chain across, Ch2, turn (75 DC sts)
Repeat row 1 over and over until the piece measures 16” x 16”
Fasten off.
Hold the two pieces together with stitches matching and wrong side facing inward. With two strands of yarn held together, working in the inner loops of both pieces at the same time, join yarn with slip st in any edging st, slip st in each remaining edging st all the way around, and insert pillow form before completing the seam. Fasten off.

Back of Pillow Option 2: Fabric Back

If you haven’t already, cut out a piece of fabric 17” x 17”.
Block the front piece of your pillow to also measure 17” x 17”
Hold the two pieces together, wrong sides facing outward, and pin the two pieces of fabric together.

Using a sewing machine, sew the two pieces together, leaving a 4” gap in the middle of one of the edges. Remember to back stitch at the beginning and end of your seam to ensure your seam does not unravel.
Turn the pillow cover right side out and insert the pillow form. Close the remaining gap by stitching by hand.
